BUSIA DEPUTY SPEAKER WILL NOT DEFEND HIS SEAT AT THE AUGUST 2022 POLLS
The Deputy Speaker of the County Assembly of Busia, Hon. Lawrence Okaale Murunga will not defend his seat as the Member of the County Assembly for Angurai North Ward, effectively rendering the DS seat vacant when the third assembly is ushered in after the August 9th, 2022 general election.
Putting the record straight over the unfolding turn of events, Hon Okaale admitted that he will not seek fresh mandate from the electorates but will pursue other new avenues which he will unveil in the next couple of days.
” The decision not to seek re-election was out of my own volition with no instigation from any quarter. I will continue serving my electorate in different capacity,” he said.
However, the outgoing Deputy Speaker, who chaired assembly sessions with articulation, urged aspirants who are eyeing his position now that it’s vacant to undertake campaigns with sober minds devoid of witch-hunt and character assassination.
” It will not argur well for some candidates to start invoking names of some people and insinuating other aspirants as projects. This is immature politics which has no place in the 21st century,” Okaale noted.
He added, ” Instead of spreading unfounded rumours, candidates should conduct their campaigns with sobriety, and those who will go through their primaries meet at the ballot to decide the next area MCA.”
He was the second Deputy Speaker from Teso North Sub County since the advent of devolution in 2013. The first was Moses Ote who failed to return to the second assembly after losing the Angurai South MCA seat to incumbent Grace Olita Omasete.
Okaale, a graduate of Kisii University and former Inspector of Police, won the seat on ODM ticket from Morris Chetambe who is in the race to recapture his seat on UDA ticket.
Other Candidates in the race include Isaac Wamalwa of DAP-K, Dan Okochet (KANU), Emman Maurice Ekirapa and Major (rtd) Scout Omasete among others.
