BUSIA GOVERNOR, REREC CEO SIGN ANOTHER MOU TO LIGHT UP MORE VILLAGES IN BUSIA

Busia Governor H.E Sospeter Ojaamong and Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) CEO Peter Mbugua on Thursday signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to facilitate electrification of more villages in Busia County

The MoU signed at Kawi offices in Nairobi will unlock Sh 15.5 million to connect more villages in the region to the national grid for the Financial Year 2021/2022.

During the meeting the team got a briefing on Projects status for the ongoing schemes and those awaiting metering.

Under Financial Year 2019/2020, 35 schemes are under construction with 21 complete and awaiting metering while 14 others are still under construction.

For the financial year 2020/2021, 71 designed schemes are awaiting survey.

Governor Ojaamong urged Mr Mbugua to follow up with his KPLC counterpart to ensure that the metering process is expedited upon to enable Busia residents enjoy the services as soon as possible.

“I have noted with concern that over 70 schemes are complete but not metered thus slowing down service delivery to my people. I’m therefore looking forward to the hastening of the metering process,” he said.

The CEO admitted that indeed metering, which is a mandate of utility company Kenya Power has slowed the process but committed to follow it up with the CEO.

The team deliberated on challenges facing implementation of the electrification project where the CEO pledged to prioritize release of materials to Busia to fasttrack the process.

They also deliberated on activating other collaboration avenues in line with the corporation’s mandate captured in the Energy Act of 2019, especially on clean cooking and use of renewables in households.
