During a meeting held in Uasin Gishu County, Willy Kenei, Chairman of the Kenya National Chambers of Commerce, revealed alarming figures regarding the economic impact of recent protests in Eldoret.
Kenei reported that businesses in the county suffered losses exceeding Ksh500 million as a result of widespread vandalism and disruptions caused by demonstrators, primarily identified as the Gen Z youth.
The chairman highlighted significant damages to properties, including extensive vandalism of mobile phone shops, electronic stores, and vehicles across Eldoret CBD.
“We also experienced substantial losses due to canceled bookings at hotels and the general destruction of county assets,” Kenei elaborated during the session.
Responding to the unrest, Jonathan Bii acknowledged that President Ruto had pledged to address the grievances raised by the youth.
“We commend the president for his commitment, and I urge our youth and residents to prioritize peace and unity,” Bii remarked, emphasizing the importance of constructive dialogue over destructive actions.
Bii, advocating for peaceful expressions of dissent, stressed, “The Gen Z should voice their concerns on national issues, but they must do so peacefully. Development hinges on peace, and it’s vital to protect our hard-earned national achievements.”
governor Jonathan Bii pledged collaborative efforts with the county government to restore a conducive business environment throughout Eldoret town. “We are committed to working closely with local businesses and authorities to ensure stability and prosperity,” the governor affirmed.
