Cabinet Secretary Leads Massive Tree Planting Drive in Kinale, Kiambu County
The lush greenery of Kinale Forest in Kiambu County witnessed a remarkable environmental initiative on May 17th, 2024, as the Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation, Hon. Zachariah Njeru, EGH, spearheaded a monumental tree planting campaign. Although unable to attend in person, his presence was felt through his representative, Mr. Charles Karondo, Chair of the Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA).
Gratitude overflowed as Mr. Karondo conveyed the Cabinet Secretary’s appreciation for the enthusiastic turnout, emphasizing the collaborative effort to bolster Kenya’s forest cover. A staggering 120,000 tree seedlings took root, underscoring a significant stride towards sustainable environmental conservation.
This monumental endeavor drew participation from a constellation of key agencies, including the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), Water Sector Trust Fund (WSTF), Water Resources Authority (WRA), Tana Water Works Development Agency, Northern Water Works Development Agency, and the Water Police Unit (WPU). Local community engagement was robust, with students from Kinale Girls High School, Kinale Primary and Junior Secondary Schools, Crossroad Primary School, and Utugi Primary and Secondary Schools actively contributing to the noble cause.
In a bid to address the critical issue of water scarcity, the Athi Water Works Development Agency pledged support by donating six 10,000-liter water tanks to schools in the vicinity. This benevolent gesture aims to bolster the schools’ water infrastructure, nurturing a conducive environment for learning while catering to the broader community’s water needs.
Distinguished figures graced the occasion, including Mr. Stephen Kihara, Secretary of Administration for the State Department for Water and Sanitation, Mr. Stephen Bor, Senior Deputy Secretary, and Mr. John Kamau, Commander of the Water Police Unit.
The event not only symbolized a unified commitment towards environmental stewardship but also underscored the transformative power of collective action in safeguarding our natural heritage for generations to come.
