Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Moses Kuria, spearheaded a consultative meeting today aimed at addressing the employment challenges encountered by the deaf community, particularly in the public sector. In attendance was Ms. Charlene Ruto, a prominent advocate for young people and member of the deaf community, accompanied by representatives from the National Association of the Deaf (NAD), led by Eunice Wambui Mboya.

The meeting focused on the barriers faced by the deaf community in securing employment opportunities, with a particular emphasis on the difficulties encountered during the recruitment and interview process. It was highlighted that deaf individuals often struggle to effectively communicate during interviews without the assistance of sign language interpreters, thereby hindering their chances of successful employment.

Recognizing the importance of inclusivity and equal opportunities for all, Cabinet Secretary Kuria pledged to address these challenges by implementing measures to facilitate the recruitment and placement of deaf individuals in the public sector. This includes the provision of sign language interpreters during interviews and a review of the existing disability policy to ensure that the specific needs of the deaf community are adequately addressed.

“The Ministry is committed to ensuring that all segments of society have equal access to employment opportunities,” stated Cabinet Secretary Kuria. “We understand the unique challenges faced by the deaf community and will work towards creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for their employment.”

The announcement was met with appreciation from Ms. Ruto, who expressed optimism about the positive impact these initiatives will have on the lives of deaf individuals seeking employment. She emphasized the importance of removing barriers and creating opportunities for the deaf community to fully participate in the workforce.

The consultative meeting marks a significant step towards fostering greater inclusivity and diversity within the public sector, reaffirming the government’s commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of all citizens, regardless of disability.
