COMMISSIONING OF BIOGAS PLANT AT DEFENCE HEADQUARTERS
The Assistant Chief of the Defence Forces in charge of Operations, Planning, Doctrine & Training (ACDF OPD&T) Major General Peter Muteti today commissioned a biogas plant as part of an Integrated Solid Waste Management System (ISWMS) at the Defence Headquarters in Nairobi.
The biogas plant is a pilot project that has been operational for over a month, is aimed at addressing Solid Waste Management challenges across the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) camps to enhance environmental health, safety and zero waste status.
Speaking at the event, Maj Gen Muteti highlighted that the data so far collected will inform the scaling up and eventual integration of the system across Formations and Units within the KDF.
“With the realisation of this project, KDF envisages phasing out dependency on liquid petroleum gas and reducing the institution’s overall environmental ‘bootprint’ by streamlining waste management & utilizing sustainable energy sources, for a greener and more environmental conscious country,” said Maj Gen Muteti.
Further, the ACDF OPD&T said that by utilizing the ISWMS, KDF will move towards attaining zero waste status, where none of the waste generated ends up in a landfill or dumping site.
The gas produced from the plant is used to cook at one of the messes nearby.
Present during the event were the Chief of Research and Development Brigadier Gilbert Oduor, Commandant Defence Headquarters Camp Admin Unit Colonel Joseph Koskei, Defence Headquarters Staff Office Environmental Security Lt Col David Wando, Officers and Service Members.
