Committee Reviews National Lands Commission’s Financial Performance
The National Assembly Committee on Lands, chaired by Hon. Joash Nyamoko, met with Mr. Gershom Ochami, Chair, and Ms. Kabale Tache, CEO of the National Land Commission (NLC) regarding budget implementation and monitoring for the fiscal year 2022/2023.
Legislators sought detailed information from the National Land Commission regarding the financial performance based on vote and programme. The Committee requested data on actual receipts, exchequer issues, recurrent expenditure, pending bills, and the extent to which the NLC had achieved its set targets.
Mr. Gershom Ochami highlighted the NLC’s total budget allocation for the fiscal year 2022/2023 amounted to Kshs 1,477,653,243. Additionally, pending bills, which were a subject of discussion, totaled Kshs 704,266,017.
Regarding issuance of title deeds to public schools and institutions. It was noted that only 151 letters of allotment were prepared and issued for such purposes in 2022/23 financial year.
However, the Committee expressed concern over the underachievement in this area.
During the meeting, documents under scrutiny by the Committee brought to light that NLC had issued 54 allotment letters for the recovery of public institution land. These actions were carried out based on recommendations from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and other statutory bodies.
Members of Parliament (MPs) present at the meeting requested further details regarding the specific parcels of land that were recovered through these efforts.
