Construction of Mulukoba Landing Site Launched

The County Government of Busia in collaboration with the National Government has today launched the construction of Mulukoba landing site in Bunyala Sub County.

Hon. Salim Mvurya, who is the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, laid the foundation stone for the construction of the landing site.

He was accompanied by the Governor of Busia County, H.E Dr Paul Nyongesa Otuoma together with the area Member of Parliament, Hon. Raphael Wanjala and Permanent Secretary Dr.Francis Owino Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs amongst other leaders.

The CS said that the Government of Kenya has decided to empower fish farmers by constructing Mulukoba fish landing site to make sure fish farmers contribute greatly to the economy of this country.

The landing site will cost kshs.124 million and it will comprise of a cold room, a receiving station and a storage room. These facilities will contribute greatly towards fish preservation and therefore reduce losses incurred by fishermen when the fish rot.

“In Lake Turkana we are doing Mango Tilapia which is being taken to Lubumbashi – Congo and Busia will not be left behind despite the challenges faced by the fishermen.” He said.

Mvurya revealed that next week’s cabinet meeting will entail discussions on the security of fishermen and how the coxwain will be trained at a lower fee.

“Kabonyo Fish Project in Kisumu will be a centre of excellence while Wakhungu and other centres will be upgraded to produce upto 7 million fingerlings to be given to fishermen to increase the fish stock in our lakes.” he added.

H.E Dr. Paul Otuoma said the project will reduce post harvest losses through proper storage.
“My Government is prioritizing Blue Economy and we are keen on making Budalangi a model Sub- County in terms of fish production.” He promised.
