County Department of Health Services Partners with Evidence Action to Enhance Access to Clean Drinking Water in Eldoret City
In a significant move to improve public health, the County Department of Health Services is set to collaborate with Evidence Action in an initiative designed to enhance access to safe and clean drinking water for peri-urban residents of Eldoret City. This partnership will focus on the installation of chlorine gadgets in raised water tanks, particularly in areas where Eldowas supply lines are unavailable.
During a recent courtesy call at his office, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health Services Dr. Abraham Serem emphasized the critical need for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalize the partnership and guide the implementation of this vital initiative. He highlighted that the provision of safe drinking water is essential for safeguarding public health and improving the quality of life for residents in underserved areas.
“The health and well-being of our communities rely heavily on access to clean drinking water,” Dr. Serem stated. “This collaboration with Evidence Action aims to bridge the gap in water supply and ensure that our residents receive safe water, which is paramount for their health.”
Promotive and Preventive Health Chief Officer Dr. Paul Wangwe noted that the introduction of chlorine gadgets is expected to have a transformative impact on the health of peri-urban populations. These gadgets will enable effective disinfection of water before it reaches residents.
“By utilizing these gadgets, we can treat contaminated water sources, effectively eliminating harmful pathogens,” Dr. Wangwe explained. “This will significantly reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid fever, which pose serious health risks in these communities.”
Hon. Isaack Chirchir, the Member of County Assembly for Soy Ward and a beneficiary of the project, emphasized the importance of local engagement for the sustainability of the initiative. “It’s vital for community members to be involved in this project. Their engagement fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility, ensuring that the benefits of clean water are sustained over the long term,” he said.
The partnership between the County Department of Health Services and Evidence Action marks a proactive step towards addressing the water quality challenges faced by peri-urban residents. As the initiative unfolds, it is expected to make significant strides in improving public health outcomes and enhancing the overall quality of life for the affected communities in Eldoret City.
