Uasin Gishu Governor, Dr. Jonathan Bii, convened a crucial meeting with the County Disaster Management Team to bolster flood mitigation efforts as heavy rains continue to lash the region. The gathering, held in Eldoret, focused on implementing strategic measures to avert disasters stemming from floods and ensuring swift response to emergencies.

Addressing the press, Governor Bii urged residents to exercise vigilance during this period and prioritize their safety. “I want to urge everyone to be extra cautious even as they go about their normal activities,” emphasized Dr. Bii, while also advising parents to closely supervise their children to prevent accidents involving water.

The governor instructed all headteachers to assess the impact of heavy rainfall on their respective schools and submit reports for necessary support from the county government to repair damaged infrastructure.

Furthermore, Governor Bii cautioned against crossing overflowing rivers and venturing into flooded areas, emphasizing the potential risks associated with such actions. He highlighted the county’s ongoing efforts to assist households affected by the recent Cheptiret flash floods, with 22 households already receiving support and calling for additional assistance from well-wishers.

Dr. Bii underscored the importance of proactive measures in responding swiftly to emergencies, including the timely deployment of county machinery. The Department of Roads, Transport, and Public Works will continue to prioritize the opening and expansion of drainage systems, with 28 dams identified for urgent attention to prevent disasters.

Residents were urged to utilize the emergency hotline (0710646464) or dial 1199 for rapid response to flood-related incidents.

The meeting saw the participation of key stakeholders, including Dr. Eddyson Nyale (County Commissioner), Eng. John Barorot (Deputy Governor), Mr. Oscar Okumu (Kenya Red Cross Head of North Rift Region), County Executive Committee members, and other senior county officials.

With these proactive measures in place, Uasin Gishu County aims to mitigate the impact of floods and enhance preparedness to safeguard the well-being of its residents during the ongoing rainy season.
