County Embarks on Clean Up and Enforcement of Notice on Buildings and Premises Improvement
The County Executive Committee Member for the Department of Lands, Physical Planning, Housing and Urban Development Mr Anthony Sitienei, today led a major enforcement action team to give Eldoret a new face-lift. This; is by the demolition of mushrooming illegal structures, removal of unapproved signages, removal of businesses operating on road reserves and providing adequate formula to attaining a clean and organized town even as conferment to city status is underway.
At Bandaptai Street, Mr. Sitienei led a team of planners and enforcement officers to ensure that all vehicles that usually park along the street are removed as well as supervised the closure of all garages operating on the road reserve at Bandaptai Street.
At Ronald Ngala Street, signages and brand advertisements not approved by Physical Planning Department that also hung along corridors were removed.
“We want a clean town and to achieve this, we are asking that every illegal structure be removed. Also for those operating garages, ensure they secure their premises with uniform box profile green iron sheets to create uniformity and neatness in their areas of work,” said Mr. Sitienei.
The exercise followed the expiry of notice given in February to all building owners to replace old roofs, paint the walls and improve their frontages by placing cabros and removing unnecessary adverts.
The Municipality of Eldoret Manager Mr.Tito Koiyet who was also on the inspection team during the exercise, confirmed the expiry of the notice and assured that the exercise would improve business operations because of the cleanliness and accessibility to premises.
“We want to enhance our walkways and make Eldoret a walking city as we are well known and so we are giving our pedestrians priority space and also improving our town’s look. As we await city status which we anticipate to attain in August, we are hopeful that we will be among the cleanest cities going forward,” said Mr. Koiyet.
Several business owners took the initiative and headed on the call by taking the steps to implement the directive.
Director Urban Planning Mr. Jacktone Kiprop, Director Enforcement Mr Cosmas Kerich, Director Physical Planning Mr. Daniel Koech, Director Lands Ms. Nelly Jerotich and Director Housing Ms Beatrice Menjo were among the senior officers that oversaw the exercise to success.
