County Government Launches Bee- Keeping Venture to Empower Farmers Alongside Rivers

In an effort to provide an alternative source of livelihood for farmers cultivating along river banks, the county government of Trans Nzoia has initiated a bee-keeping venture.

The government has procured bee hives for distribution to farmers as part of an ambitious environmental conservation plan aimed at safeguarding rivers which is part of HE Governor George Natembeya’s agenda on mitigating climate change.

“We have acquired 200 beehives to be distributed to beneficiaries in the first phase,” stated the county executive committee member in charge of Water, Environment and irrigation Patrick Gacheru at Makoi in Cherangany Sub County.

Mr. Gacheru spearheaded the distribution of 30 bee hives to the Umoja Central group, consisting of 30 farmers who farm alongside river Sabwani.

“We will utilize the beehives to produce honey, which is currently a lucrative venture, with one kilo selling for sh 200,” said Paul Kariuki, the chairman of the group.
Furthermore, the county government has procured 200 environmentally friendly and health-conscious charcoal Jikos, which will be distributed to women to combat the adverse effects of deforestation.

The project is supported by the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) Program.
