The Uasin Gishu County Youth Service policy will go a long way to bolster efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change.

The policy which is in its final stages of becoming law, will offer legal frameworks for, among others, ratifying programs to tackle climate change.

Speaking during the International Youth Day in Uasin Gishu County on Saturday, Governor Jonathan Bii said the youth have the potential to help in efforts to solve climate change.

Governor Bii said the (youth service) policy has been engineered to create ways through which youth can be empowered to be the segment that will help end the effects of climate change.

Depressed rains experienced in Kenya in the first quarter of the year, which caused the death of animals and loss of human lives, were blamed on climate change, which is primarily a result of shrinking forest cover.

To solve climate change, which is currently a global problem, President Dr. William Ruto is leading a campaign that sets a target of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.

Governor Bii says his administration, through the youth policy, will put youth on the frontline for climate action campaigns.

Also, the Governor called on the youth to use their technological knowledge to collect, analyze data and introduce innovations to combat climate change.

“You are the architects of our tomorrow, therefore the world relies on you. Use technology to make innovations that will assist in mitigating the effects of climate change,” said Governor Bii.

The Governor also enumerated youth empowerment programs that his government is undertaking.

The empowerment programs include organizing tourneys to identify, and nurture talent, free internet to assist youth pick digital employment and youth getting up to 30 percent in reserved procurement opportunities all inspired by the slogan “Vijana ni Nguzo Tuwakuze.”

Member of the County Assembly for Tarakwa, Thomas Yego, also a member of the Assembly’s Sports and Youth Committee, promised that programs and legislations that seek to empower the youth will be supported.

County Executive for Youth, Sports ICT and Innovation Eng Lucy Ng’endo and her Chief Officer, Nahum Jelagat also spoke on the empowerment programs that youth can take advantage of.

Directors Peter Ruto (Youth Affairs) and Musa Mutai (Protocol) were among the county officials who attended the event attended by about 300 youth.
