Sports Cabinet Secretary Amb Amina Mohammed on Thursday visited Kipchoge Keino stadium in Eldoret town where construction works have stalled.
The CS was making her first visit to the stadium since she was moved to the Sports docket.
Earlier, the CS paid a courtesy call to Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno at the County headquarters.
Accompanied by Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor, Amb Mohammed assessed construction works at the stadium after which she assured that it will be completed in the next 7 months.
Construction works at the stadium started about 8 years ago but to date, no much progress has been made.
“I’ve been sent here by the President and I want to assure you that in the next six to seven months, the stadium will be complete,” noted the CS.
On his part, Chemno expressed the need for construction works to be hastened so that the stadium is ready in time for athletes to use in preparations for the Tokyo Olymics which have been pushed to 2021 as a result of Coronavirus pandemic.
“If we don’t complete this stadium, our athletes might not perform well in the Olympics because as at now they don’t have a place to train,” noted Chemno.
Chemno also asked the Ministry of Sports to consider hosting trials for Tokyo Olympics in Eldoret.
He said, “We have the fans here and half of them are former athletes, you can’t get that anywhere else in the country.”
Kipchoge Stadium successful hosted the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympics trial.
During the visit the Deputy Governor and the Cabinet Secretary were accompanied by County Secretary Edwin Bett and County Executive Member Sport Joseph Kurgat among other county officials.
