Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Issues Statement on Political Harassment
In a strong address, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua condemned the recent use of the criminal justice system for political maneuvering, asserting that such tactics are outdated and harmful to Kenya’s democracy.
Upon taking office, President William Ruto and Gachagua promised Kenyans that the justice system would no longer be weaponized for political gain. However, Gachagua expressed embarrassment at the current situation, where members of his office and allied Members of Parliament are reportedly facing harassment and intimidation.
Gachagua revealed that there is a concerning scheme targeting his staff and two MPs—Hon. James Gakuya of Embakasi North and Hon. Benjamin Gathiru Mejja Donk of Embakasi Central. He claimed these individuals are being unjustly linked to violent protests that occurred in late June, suggesting that the aim is to tarnish his reputation and lay the groundwork for potential impeachment proceedings.
“Kenyans are intelligent and aware of the issues that have driven them to the streets,” Gachagua stated. “They understand the true challenges facing our nation and know that I am not among them.”
The Deputy President urged law enforcement agencies to uphold professionalism, adhere to the rule of law, and steer clear of political entanglements, reinforcing the commitment to a fair and just system for all Kenyans.
