Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Visits Legendary Gikuyu Music Maestro Wanganangu

In a heartfelt tribute to a cultural icon, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accompanied by several leaders from the region, visited the renowned Gikuyu music maestro Paul Mutonga, popularly known as Wanganangu, at his home in Muchatha today.

Wanganangu, who is celebrated for his traditional Gikuyu music and unique artistry, has been a significant figure in preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the Gikuyu people. From 1993 to 1996, Deputy President Gachagua, then serving as the District Officer in Kiambaa, was a regular attendee of events where Wanganangu’s music enthralled audiences with its educational and entertaining content.

During the visit, which was also attended by Kiambu Senator Karungo Thang’wa, MPs Jayne Kihara (Naivasha), Samuel Parashina (Kajiado South), Benjamin Gathiru Mejjadonk (Embakasi Central), and Muchatha Ward Representative Karanja Kamau (KK), the Deputy President was pleased to see that at 95 years old, Wanganangu’s legendary voice and vibrant smile remain as captivating as ever.

“I am overjoyed to see Wanganangu in such good spirits and good health,” said Deputy President Gachagua. “His music has been a cornerstone of our cultural heritage, and it is our duty to cherish and honor our heroes who have dedicated their lives to preserving our traditions.”

The visit was a celebration of Wanganangu’s contributions to Gikuyu music and culture. As Wanganangu performed some of his most beloved songs, the atmosphere was filled with nostalgia and reverence for the maestro’s impact on the community.

“We are grateful to God for granting Wanganangu such a long life and we continue to pray for his good health and happiness,” Gachagua added. “It is important for us to remember and value our cultural heroes because their artistry plays a crucial role in promoting and preserving our cultural heritage.”

The event also served as a reminder of the importance of supporting and appreciating those who have shaped the cultural landscape of Kenya. As the melodies of Wanganangu’s songs filled the air, it was evident that his legacy will continue to inspire and educate future generations.

Deputy President Gachagua, along with the attending leaders, expressed their gratitude for Wanganangu’s contributions and pledged to support efforts aimed at celebrating and preserving Kenya’s rich cultural traditions.
