Dr. Ekrah Ndungu, Chairperson of KENAPCO, Offers Guidance for Parents and Form Four Leavers
As Form Four students across the country complete their final exams, Dr. Ekrah Ndungu, Chairperson of the Kenya National Association of Private Colleges (KENAPCO), has offered timely advice to parents and students during this critical period. Speaking at a press briefing at the KENAPCO offices in Nairobi, Dr. Ndungu emphasized the importance of thoughtful planning to ensure a smooth transition into the next phase of life for school leavers.
Dr. Ndungu encouraged parents to take an active role in guiding their children, stressing the importance of fostering independence, instilling values, and nurturing their aspirations. She urged parents to allow students time to rest and reflect on their interests and strengths after the high-pressure exam period. Parents were advised to assist in researching career options, vocational training opportunities, and internships aligned with their children’s passions. Dr. Ndungu also emphasized the importance of discussing further education options, such as university, technical training, or online learning platforms, and teaching practical life skills like budgeting, time management, and effective communication. Additionally, she encouraged parents to advocate for real-world experiences, such as volunteering or internships, and to provide emotional support to help their children navigate uncertainties during this transition.
Addressing the Form Four leavers, Dr. Ndungu encouraged them to embrace this transitional period with positivity and openness, describing it as a defining moment in their journey. She urged them to take time to rest and identify their interests and strengths to make informed decisions about their future. Students were advised to explore career options, research further education opportunities, and focus on building practical skills like financial management and communication. She also highlighted the importance of gaining work experience through internships or volunteer roles, maintaining a growth mindset, and seeking mentorship from professionals or counselors. Dr. Ndungu stressed the need to prioritize mental well-being, acknowledging the stress that comes with transitions and encouraging students to seek help when needed.
Dr. Ndungu further emphasized the role of private colleges in bridging the gap between secondary education and the job market. She highlighted the diverse programs offered by KENAPCO-affiliated institutions, which provide hands-on experience and market-relevant skills, and urged students to consider these options as they plan their next steps. She concluded by reiterating KENAPCO’s commitment to supporting students and their families during this pivotal phase and called on the government, educational stakeholders, and parents to work together to ensure every Form Four leaver is equipped for success.
