As the world celebrates International Men’s Day today, Dr. Ekrah Ndungu shared a heartfelt and insightful message, reflecting on the theme of “Positive Role Models.” Acknowledging her own unique perspective as a woman, Dr. Ndungu humorously noted, “Do I really qualify to talk about men?” before diving into her personal reflections and thoughts on the role men play in society.
“I am a last born of four boys, a daddy’s girl, the only girl in my family. My father, who is now my sole parent after the passing of my mother, has been my role model. With that experience, I feel well-placed to comment on the significance of men in our lives,” she explained.
In her message, Dr. Ndungu emphasized the immense influence positive male role models have on shaping societies. She said, “Men who lead with integrity, compassion, and responsibility have an incredible impact on society. They inspire others to embrace their potential, demonstrate kindness, and build communities grounded in respect and equality.”
This year’s theme highlights the growing need for men to model values of empathy, accountability, and respect—especially in a world that continues to grapple with issues such as broken families and fractured communities. Dr. Ndungu expressed particular concern for younger generations, noting that Generation Z and Gen Alpha are in urgent need of positive male role models.
“True masculinity is not about strength or dominance but about showing vulnerability, supporting one another, and actively working towards a more just and inclusive society. Men must rise to the occasion not just by achieving personal success, but by uplifting others around them,” she urged.
Reflecting on the struggles faced by many families today, particularly the erosion of traditional support systems, Dr. Ndungu called for men to become pillars of strength, not through power, but through love and integrity. “Whether in our families, workplaces, or communities, it is the everyday actions of positive role models that lay the foundation for a brighter future,” she said.
