Dr Nyongesa Hails Efforts to Contain Cancer
Texas Cancer Center Founder and Chief Executive Officer Dr Catherine Nyongesa has taken a moment to express her optimism with a motion sponsored by Marakwet West MP Timothy Toroitich that seeks to establish a national Cancer control and prevention fund.
The motion acknowledges every person has a right to access the highest attainable standard of health, which includes
the right to health care services; further aware that cancer is among the leading
causes of death in the country; noting that although the budgetary allocation for
health care services is progressive, it is inadequate to cater for cancer prevention and
care across the country.
The highly respected oncologist noted,
“As a doctor, I commend the proactive efforts taken by Marakwet West MP, Hon. Timothy Toroitich Kipchumba, in moving a motion for the Establishment of a National Cancer Prevention and Control Fund. This initiative demonstrates a deep understanding of the critical importance of addressing cancer as a major public health concern.
The acknowledgment of every individual’s right to access the highest standard of health, including healthcare services, reflects a commitment to ensuring the well-being of the population. It is commendable that Hon. Toroitich recognizes that cancer ranks among the leading causes of death in the country and acknowledges the current limitations in budgetary allocation for healthcare services, particularly for cancer prevention and care. This highlights a visionary approach to tackling an issue that affects many lives.
The recognition of inadequate cancer care infrastructure and the mention of the Cancer Prevention and Control Act, 2012, underline a thorough understanding of the challenges that need to be addressed for effective cancer control. By seeking to promote access to quality and affordable diagnostic and treatment services, as well as ensuring sustainable capacity for cancer prevention and control, the motion shows a comprehensive approach to addressing the multifaceted aspects of cancer care.
Furthermore, the motion’s directive to establish a national cancer prevention and control fund through the National Treasury reflects a pragmatic approach to resource allocation. This fund has the potential to significantly impact cancer prevention, control, and treatment across the country, signaling a commitment to improving the overall cancer care landscape.
In conclusion, the motion put forward by Hon. Timothy Toroitich Kipchumba is a commendable step towards enhancing cancer prevention and control efforts in the country. It demonstrates a thorough understanding of the challenges and a commitment to improving the lives of individuals affected by cancer.
