Eastern Produce Kenya (EPK) has made a significant investment in education by commissioning eight newly upgraded science laboratories across junior schools in Nandi County, at a cost of KSh 16 million. This initiative is part of EPK’s broader commitment to enhancing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education in the region.

The renovated laboratories are located in schools within EPK’s tea estates, such as Khartoum Junior School, Kipchamo Junior School, and Kipsitoi Junior School, as well as neighboring community schools including Septon Junior School, Kamarini Junior School, Chepkunyuk Junior School, Nandi Hills Township Junior School, and Cheptabach Junior School.

Mrs. Leah Kibii Chirchir, EPK’s Company Director, emphasized the company’s dedication to improving community welfare and educational standards. “Our investment in these laboratories aims to bolster the Government’s Competency-Based Curriculum, which is designed to nurture critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and communication skills among students,” Chirchir said.

EPK’s education initiatives are built on past successes, such as the significant improvement in science results at Savani Secondary School following the construction of its first science laboratory in 2020. The school saw a steady increase in university-bound students, from 2 in 2020 to 14 in 2023.

In addition to the laboratory upgrades, EPK has launched a secondary school scholarship program, providing KSh 2 million in full scholarships to three high-achieving students—two boys and one girl. This is part of EPK’s broader strategy to support educational aspirations and promote inclusive, quality education.

EPK’s contributions to education align with Sustainable Development Goal 4, which focuses on ensuring quality education for all. Since 2019, EPK has invested over KSh 30 million in educational projects, benefiting more than 60,000 learners. These efforts include establishing 15 schools within its estates, supporting Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centers, and enhancing digital literacy through computer donations and lab setups.

Additionally, EPK supports adolescent students with life skills education and menstruation products, aiming to improve school attendance and promote gender equality.

Through these initiatives, EPK continues to demonstrate its commitment to fostering educational advancement and community development in Nandi County.
