ECD Teachers Hold First Annual Welfare Meeting

In a significant development, Busia County’s Department of Education and Industrial Skills Development convened 1st annual general meeting for the ECDE Welfare (Self-Help Group) at the Busia Agricultural Training Center (ATC).

The main objective of the welfare group was to foster unity within the ECDE fraternity, comprising of teachers, support staff, and secretariat members, offering support during bereavement and to cater for other social needs.

Representing Busia Governor, H.E Dr. Paul Otuoma, Deputy Governor and CECM for Health and Sanitation, H.E Arthur Odera, encouraged formation of award-scheme that will seek to recognize best performing teachers and ECD centres through a performance management system.

Highlighting the county’s commitment to enhancing ECDE education, Hon. Odera announced the imminent recruitment of 120 ECDE teachers, signifying a 25% increase from the current workforce. This initiative will be an ongoing process, ensuring a continual 25% growth in teacher numbers each year to maintain an optimal pupil-to-teacher ratio in ECDE.

“The County Government of Busia is dedicated to streamlining the work of ECDE teachers, facilitating improved performance and acknowledging the valuable contributions you make,” Odera affirmed.

Chief Officer of Education, Mr. Faustine Ounoi Ochunga, assured that all ECDE teachers on contract would be confirmed on permanent and pensionable terms.

Additionally, efforts are underway to address promotions for eligible teachers.

During the event, guest speaker Dr. Wafula, a lecturer at Kibabii University emphasized the importance of teachers joining savings and credit cooperatives (saccos) for future financial security in their retirement. He urged teachers to collaborate, stating, “In unity, teachers can collectively build investments, making it easier to secure a prosperous future together.”

The gathering included notable persons such as Hon. George Wesonga (Nominated MCA), the County Attorney, Innocent Omboko, KNUT representatives, Cooperative Bank Manager, ECDE Director, Dr Douglas Baraza, ECD Sub County Coordinators and partners amongst others.
