Education Committee Faults TSC For Interdicting Teachers Who Fled North Eastern
Members of the National Assembly’s Education Committee led by chairperson, Hon. Julius Melly (Tinderet) have expressed empathy following the interdiction of over 100 teachers by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for fleeing their duty stations in North Eastern Kenya due to insecurity concerns.
During a meeting with representatives of the over 100 affected tutors, Hon. Melly faulted TSC for the arbitrary action, acknowledging the teachers’ justified fears for their personal safety.
“ I apologize on behalf of this Committee and Parliament for the harrowing experience you have undergone. TSC should have acted and treated you better,” said Hon. Melly, after representatives of the affected teachers recounted horrific stories of how they find it difficult to discharge their duties.
The teachers, led by Charles Achol and Peter Kamoet, recounted their experiences , including how they have been spending nights in police stations due to Al-Shabaab threats. They also revealed how they have found it difficult to travel to their places of work.
“ Being non-locals and not members of the religious faith of the majority of members in the region, we are soft targets to the Al-Shabaab insurgents . We also find it difficult to travel because buses and other vehicles are prone to attacks by the militants,” explained Mr Achol.
They told the MPs that despite raising concerns and requesting relocation, their pleas had been ignored.
According to the group, they were later issued with interdiction letters after they declined to go back to the region for fear of their lives.
Hon. Melly assured the Committee’s commitment to ensure justice is rendered and that their plight is addressed fairly. He announced that the Committee will hold a meeting with TSC’s top leadership next week to address the teachers’ situation.
“We have invited TSC CEO Nancy Macharia and all the commissioners to appear before the Committee next week and explain why the teachers were interdicted yet they have genuine concerns,” he said.
