The energy crackled in Eldoret on Friday, April 5th, 2024, as Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim launched the second edition of the Governor’s Cup tournament at the Kipchoge Keino Stadium. This year’s competition promises to be bigger and better, attracting aspiring athletes from across the county and offering them a chance to compete for a significantly increased prize pool.

Governor Chelilim listened to the pleas of local sportspeople and upped the ante, raising the total prize money to a staggering Ksh 9 million. The ultimate victor will walk away with a cool Ksh 500,000, with Ksh 300,000, Ksh 200,000, and Ksh 100,000 awaiting the second, third, and fourth-place finishers, respectively.

Looking back at the inaugural tournament, Governor Chelilim hailed it a resounding success. The competition, which focused on volleyball, saw nearly 3,000 enthusiastic youths participate. He highlighted how the event wasn’t just about fostering local talent, but also about putting Uasin Gishu County on the national sporting map, particularly during the Kenya Inter County Sports Association games held in TharakaNithi.

While Eldoret is synonymous with athletic champions, Governor Chelilim acknowledged the burgeoning football talent within the county. This year’s tournament aims to shine a spotlight on these footballers, with the hope of discovering future stars who can emulate the likes of Adrine Kibet, a young athlete currently making waves at the Nastic Sports Academy in Tarragona, Spain.

The launch strategically coincided with World Physical Activity Day, a global reminder of the vital link between sports and overall well-being. Governor Chelilim went beyond just acknowledging the importance of physical fitness; he emphasized how the Governor’s Cup plays a crucial role in promoting a healthier Eldoret community.

The Governor spoke about the challenges faced by the county’s youth, including substance abuse and mental health issues. He positioned the Governor’s Cup tournament as a positive outlet, aligning with his “Nguzo Kumi” blueprint, which prioritizes youth development. By providing a platform for them to excel in sports, the competition aims to steer young people away from harmful behaviors.

As the tournament gets underway, Governor Chelilim urged all participating teams to embody the true spirit of sportsmanship, teamwork, and discipline. He emphasized the pivotal role that sports play in building a vibrant and progressive Eldoret, especially as the county strives towards achieving city status. The Governor concluded by expressing his sincere appreciation to the tournament’s partners for their invaluable support in making this year’s Governor’s Cup a reality.
