Eldoret: Police Net Alleged Robbers, Recover Revolver Gun, Stolen Phones in Sting Operation

Eldoret residents can rest easier after police arrested two young men believed to be responsible for a spate of violent robberies in the Elgon View and Naiberi estates.

Uasin Gishu County Commander Benjamin Mwanthi confirmed the arrests. “We apprehended two young men, aged between 20 and 25, who have been terrorizing residents,” Mwanthi said.

“These individuals were caught with a loaded revolver gun, posing a serious threat to public safety.”

Police also arrested the owner of a shop at Petrishah bulding where the phones were being sold.

Mwanthi revealed the suspects targeted people engaged in morning exercise routines. Police had been on the trail of the men since March, and their investigation culminated in the arrests on Sunday.

“This arrest should reassure the residents of Elgon View and the entire community of their safety,” Mwanthi emphasized.

The operation yielded more than just apprehending the suspects. Police also recovered a significant haul of stolen goods – 42 mobile phones – from an electronics shop in Eldoret.

Authorities believe this shop was a fence operation, where stolen items were being sold for a fraction of their value – a mere 6,000 shillings each.

“Residents whose phones were stolen in recent weeks are encouraged to visit the Eldoret Police Station to identify their belongings,” urged Mwanthi.

Mwanthi commended the community’s role in the arrests. “Residents have been instrumental in acting as our watchdogs by reporting suspicious activity,” he said. “We urge everyone to continue this vigilance. It’s through this cooperation that we can keep our streets safe.”

Gishu County Criminal Investigation Officer Daniel Muleli provided further details on the next steps. “The suspects will undergo a thorough interrogation before being arraigned in court,” Muleli said. “Additionally, a ballistic examination will be conducted on the recovered firearm to determine if it has been used in other criminal activities.”

Muleli echoed Mwanthi’s call for public participation. “The public is encouraged to come forward and identify any stolen phones recovered during the operation,” he added. “This will help reunite these stolen items with their rightful owners.”
