The County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet, in collaboration with World Vision, has embarked on a new initiative aimed at enhancing livestock management through the implementation of a Livestock Identification and Traceability System (LITS). This partnership, which seeks to modernize the county’s livestock sector, is expected to boost disease control measures and improve the overall value of livestock production.

The County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries, Edwin Seronei, who led the discussions, emphasized the importance of adopting modern technologies to strengthen livestock farming. He noted that the LITS program will be a game-changer in managing livestock health and economic development in the region.

“This system will not only improve disease control but also create greater market value for our livestock keepers,” said Seronei. “I urge farmers to embrace these technological advancements, as they will play a crucial role in enhancing productivity and fostering economic growth.”

As part of the initiative, the county government plans to conduct training sessions for veterinary and livestock officers starting next week. This training is aimed at empowering livestock keepers with the knowledge and skills necessary to manage their herds more efficiently.

World Vision’s representative, Moses Kiptugen, highlighted the importance of data collection under the new system. “The Livestock Identification and Traceability System will help gather essential data on livestock health and management practices, providing valuable insights for better decision-making,” he explained.

Also present at the meeting were the county’s Chief Officer for Livestock, Robert Langat, and Director of Livestock, Joseph Kiyeng, who both expressed optimism about the program’s potential to transform the county’s livestock sector.

The initiative is expected to bring long-term benefits to the farmers of Elgeyo Marakwet, promoting healthier herds, improved market access, and enhanced food security.
