Elgeyo Marakwet Farmers Receive Sorghum Seeds in Government Initiative
In a concerted effort to boost agricultural productivity and empower local farmers, Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich spearheaded the distribution of 12 metric tonnes of sorghum seeds in Kerio Valley. The initiative, aimed at enhancing food security and economic prosperity in the region, is set to benefit thousands of farmers across the valley.
With the generous provision of sorghum seeds, farmers in the area have the opportunity to cultivate over 3000 acres of land. Based on an average yield of 8 bags (90 kg) per acre, it is estimated that farmers will harvest approximately 2,160 tonnes of sorghum. This substantial yield promises significant economic returns for farmers and the local community.
To ensure a sustainable market for the produce, the County Government has forged a partnership with East African Breweries Limited (EABL) through contract farming. Under the agreement, EABL will purchase the sorghum produce at a rate of sh 45 per kilo. This translates to a staggering sum of sh108 million in potential earnings for farmers, assuming all factors remain constant.
While Governor Rotich led the distribution efforts in one part of the Valley, Deputy Governor Prof. Grace Cheserek, along with County Executive Committee Members (CECs), Chief Officers (COs), and other county staff, took charge of the exercise in Endo, Lower Emsoo, and Lower Tambach. The collaborative effort highlights the commitment of the county leadership to ensure equitable distribution and maximum reach of the agricultural support initiative.
Looking ahead, a similar distribution exercise is scheduled for tomorrow in lower Sambirir, Arror, Soy North, and Soy South. The strategic planning of the distribution across various regions underscores the government’s dedication to extending support to farmers across the entire county.
In his address to farmers, Governor Rotich urged them to capitalize on the favorable weather conditions and ample rainfall to plant their farms promptly. He emphasized the importance of seizing the opportunity to maximize the potential of the sorghum seeds provided, thereby contributing to the growth and prosperity of the agricultural sector in Elgeyo Marakwet.
The distribution of sorghum seeds represents a significant milestone in the county’s efforts to promote agricultural development and improve the livelihoods of its residents. With strong government support and collaboration with private sector partners, Elgeyo Marakwet is poised to witness a resurgence in agricultural productivity and economic prosperity in the days to come.
