Elgeyo Marakwet County today hosted a United Nations (UN) event to celebrate the 23rd Anniversary of the UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.

The event was led by Gender, Culture, Arts and Heritage Principal Secretary Anne Wang’ombe and Mr. Dan Bazira, Deputy Country Representative, UN Women. It was also attended by H.E Governor Wisley Rotich, Deputy Governor Prof. Grace Cheserek, County Commissioner Mr John Korir, former Cabinet Minister Linah Kilimo, and other dignitaries.

During the event, the County Action Plan 2020-2024 was officially launched. This plan recognizes the role played by women in peace building and prevention of conflicts.

In his speech, Governor Rotich underscored the role played by women in society, especially in peace building. He said that women make immense contributions to peace building, despite the challenges they face.

The governor also highlighted some of the initiatives that his administration has taken to support women in the county, such as training them on income generating activities and making them peace agents. He pledged that his administration would ensure that women and girls have their space and protection.

The UN Security Council Resolution 1325 is a landmark resolution that recognizes the disproportionate impact of armed conflict on women and girls, and calls for increased participation of women in peace and security efforts.

The event held in Elgeyo Marakwet is a significant step towards promoting the implementation of UNSCR 1325 in Kenya. It is also a reminder of the important role that women play in peace building and conflict prevention.
