Elgeyo Marakwet Political Leaders want Government to Intensify Security Patrols
Political leaders from Elgeyo Marakwet County has asked the government to intensify the security in Kerio Valley.
Elgeyo Marakwet Deputy Governor Prof Grace Cheserek led the leaders who included County Assembly members in condemning the continued killings teeming them territorial expansion attempts by the members of a neighbouring community hiding as banditry.
“The killings are well calculated. They are driving an agenda. They are on a clear mission of extending their territory towards Elgeyo Marakwet. In history, it is an abomination to kill a woman or a child in the Kalenjin community but the bandits are now killing everyone,” lamented Prof Cheserek.
The bandits killed two county staff in the last two days taking the tally of those fallen by the killers suspected to be from Tiaty to about 20 in Endo and Arror Ward since the beginning of the year.
She said women in the now volatile Kerio Valley have nothing to celebrate especially during this month where women are globally recognised during World Women’s Day. “A woman in Kerio Valley has nothing to show on this day. Children are sleeping in the bush. All county projects are currently disrupted which directly affects the development of the region,” she said, “it is like they are targeting our staff. They want to eliminate those who are helping the local community.”
Education and Technical Training County Executive Committee Member Edwin Kibor said the killings had seen teachers failing to report to school due to fear of the bandits who now kill at will.
County Assembly Speaker Philemon Sabulei said the killings had not only retarded development in the region but also caused suffering to the people.
Majority leader Stephen Cheruiyot called on the government to intervene before things escalate to be worse.
Kapyego MCA Joseph Chebet said the government had abandoned the people of Kerio Valley. “It is time the government consider the people of Kerio Valley. Successive governments have neglected the area and what we are witnessing is nothing different,” he said.
