Elgeyo Marakwet County today woke up to the tragic news of the passing of Chicago Marathon Champion Kelvin Kiptum together with his coach.

Governor Wisley Rotich has led County residents in registering shock and disbelief at the tragic loss of Elgeyo Marakwet’s finest and budding marathoner.

“We have lost him when he was just starting to conquer the world. No words can explain this.I am devastated. My sincere condolences to His wife, children, family,EMC residents, sports family and Kenya. Go well Champion and friend till we meet again,” said the Governor.

The Governor eulogised the late Kiptum as a humble, focused, hardworking and disciplined athlete.

“He followed all the advice we gave him together with EMC leaders ,residents ,coach and family,” he added.
The County boss further revealed that the late Kiptum had given him a commitment to run under 2 hours in 2024, a feat that would have lasted for centuries.

The Governor also recalled how he ensured Kiptum got a befitting grand reception in October 2023 when he broke the world marathon record.

“I was prepared to host more homecoming ceremonies. But as fate has it, we have lost him,” he said.

According to a police report, the late Kiptum was travelling from Eldoret heading towards Ravine when he lost control of a vehicle he was driving and veered off-road into a ditch on his left side.

He drove in the ditch for about 60 metres before hitting a tree. As a result, Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana died on the spot
