Engineers Converge to Bridge Academia and Industry Gap at Annual Convention
Over 350 delegates gathered for the 3rd Annual Convention hosted by the Association of Consulting Engineers of Kenya (ACEK), focused on “Engineering and Engineering Materials Equipment.” The event, running from 28th to 30th August 2024, aims to address the stagnation in the engineering profession caused by the disconnect between academia and industry.
The forum brought together industry experts, academics, and engineering professionals to discuss ways to enhance collaboration and integrate practical knowledge into industry applications. The discussions highlighted the need for engineers to adapt to modern technology and innovation to solve pressing human and community issues effectively.
During the opening session, Eng. Erastus Mwongera, Chairman of the Engineers Board of Kenya, emphasized the importance of innovation and collaboration. “The future of engineering lies in our ability to innovate and lead. By working together and fostering collaboration, we can ensure a more resilient engineering sector,” he said.
Eng. Mwongera also outlined ongoing initiatives, including efforts to increase engineer registrations, expedite career progression, and implement the Building Control Bill. These measures are aimed at improving infrastructure and expanding the Graduate Engineers Internship Program.
ACEK Chair Eng. Jane Mutilili urged engineers to push the boundaries of their profession. “I challenge engineers to enhance Kenya’s global competitiveness through the integration of advanced technologies and materials in building projects,” she stated.
The convention reflects a concerted effort to rejuvenate the engineering sector by bridging the gap between academic theories and practical industry applications, setting the stage for future innovations and growth.
