Speaking to the press manager of the organization, Peter Njenga urges the government to employ street families, enroll them in National Youth Service, build rescue centers and draft policies and strategies that would govern these centers because a majority of the staff in rescue centres are not qualified.
He said many people lost jobs due to coronavirus that has led to increase of street children and called on the government to help street children, we need rescue centers since the existing ones are few.
“We do not have enough rescue centers to accommodate street families because of economic problems. We ask the government to deal with street families by employing them, enrolling them in National Youth Service, and sending those who are willing to school. Street family fund disbursed from Nairobi should be used by the county government to run the rescue centers,” Njenga said.
A census report conducted by the government on street families indicates that they are over 46,600 street families in Kenya and the number gradually increases each year.
He further called on both the National and County governments to ensure that street children are taken good care of instead of always harassing them in the streets.
