On Jamhuri Day, Faith Odhiambo, the President of the Law Society of Kenya, was honored with the prestigious ICJ Kenya Jurist of the Year Award. The recognition came on the eve of the 61st anniversary of Kenya’s independence, a poignant moment that prompted Odhiambo to reflect on the nation’s progress and challenges.

In her acceptance speech, Odhiambo expressed both gratitude and humility, dedicating the award to the many individuals who have joined her in the ongoing struggle for justice and constitutional integrity. She noted that while the award symbolizes excellence, it also underscores the ongoing battle for a truly independent and free state.

“After 61 years of independence, why should it be that this award, more than an appreciation of excellence, is symbolic of how hard we continue fighting to defend the people of what ought to be a free, independent state from repressive rule?” Odhiambo questioned, highlighting the enduring struggle for justice in Kenya.

Despite the historical context of Kenya’s independence and the challenges still faced, Odhiambo was optimistic about the future. She stressed that while the scars of the past remain visible, the commitment to a better future should unite all Kenyans.

The ICJ Kenya Jurist of the Year Award is a prestigious recognition of individuals who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to the legal profession and human rights. Odhiambo’s leadership within the Law Society of Kenya and her unwavering advocacy for the rule of law have earned her the admiration of her peers.

As Kenya continues to reflect on its history and progress, Odhiambo’s message of hope and commitment to change resonated with many, reinforcing the collective resolve for a brighter and more just future.
