Ferdinand Omanyala Aims to Make History at Diamond League Race in Monaco
Ferdinand Omanyala, the reigning Commonwealth Games 100 meters champion, is setting his sights on becoming the first Kenyan to win the 100 meters in Monaco Diamond League race when he competes in Monaco Diamond League.
Scheduled for Friday, June 21, 2023, the race will see Omanyala pitted against his African counterparts, including South Africa’s AkaniSimbine and LetsileTebogo.
Simbine, who recently emerged victorious in the Polish Diamond League’s 100 meters category, aims to secure another win and prevent Omanyala from clinching his first victory in the event.
This will be Omanyala’s fourth appearance in the Diamond League competition, having previously competed in races held in Morocco (Rabat), Italy (Florence), and France (Paris). Despite his previous attempts, he has yet to claim a victory.
Expressing confidence in his abilities, Omanyala stated after his final training session at Kasarani, “I am in the best shape ever, and victory is within reach.”
The Commonwealth 100 meters champion emphasized that no one is unbeatable, responding to Simbine’s recent win against Tebogo by saying, “Nobody is invincible.”
Omanyala enters the race as the fastest athlete, boasting a season’s best record of 9.84 seconds and a personal record of 9.77 seconds. With the absence of American athletes Fred Kerley and Noah Lyles, who won the Rabat, Florence, and Paris Diamond League races, Omanyala’s chances of securing victory in the Monaco Diamond League have improved.
100 meters World Champion Kerley won the Rabat and Florence Diamond Leagues while 200 meters world Champion Lyle won the Paris Diamond League.
In addition to the Diamond League race, Omanyala is set to participate in the World Athletics Championships scheduled from August 19th to 27th in Hungary. He will also take part in the Diamond League finals, which will be held in Oregon, USA, on September 15th.
