First Lady Rachel Ruto Unveils Recreational Park, Plants 4,000 Trees in Kitale
First Lady Rachel Ruto on Saturday inaugurated a recreational park named after her in Kitale. The park , located opposite the New Kenya Cooperative Cremaries(KCC), witnessed a flurry of activities during its launch, including the planting of 4,000 indigenous trees.
The park, spanning over 202.2 hectares of degraded forest, aims to provide amenities such as landscaping, a walking track, and free high-speed Wi-Fi for visitors, particularly the youth.
Mrs. Ruto emphasized the importance of increasing the forest cover by encouraging residents of Trans Nzoia County to plant trees in their homesteads. She also highlighted the significance of recreational areas in bringing communities together and promoting environmental conservation.
The First Lady expressed her vision for the park, stating, “The new park will be an integrated urban picturesque destination for tourism, culture, festivals, dining, and relaxation.” She underscored the role of parks in urban environments, not only providing recreational spaces but also offering environmental services such as air purification.
Mrs. Ruto entrusted the management of the park to the Trans Nzoia County Government and called upon the residents to support Governor George Natembeya in his endeavors to uplift the county.
In addition to the park inauguration, Mrs. Ruto announced a joint initiative by Kenya Seed and New KCC to drill a borehole worth Sh 4 million, addressing the issue of clean drinking water in the slum area. She encouraged the church to lead by example in tree planting and stressed the importance of table banking for women’s empowerment.
The First Lady concluded her visit by meeting with women groups, including the Joyful Women Organization, and engaging with the youth movement called 500 Voices at the Kitale Club.
According to Trans Nzoia County First Lady Lilian Natembeya, Mama Rachel Ruto’s efforts reflect her humility and simplicity, inspiring Kenyans from all walks of life to care for the less fortunate.
Mrs. Natembeya pledged her commitment to collaborate with Mrs. Ruto in achieving President Dr. William Ruto’s goal of planting 15 billion indigenous trees by 2032. The county, under the leadership of Governor George Natembeya, has already planted 500,000 trees and will fully support the national tree planting campaign.
Among the notable officials accompanying First Lady Rachel Ruto and her host, Lilian Natembeya, were Trans Nzoia County Commissioner Gideon Oyagi, Endebess MP Robert Pukose, various government officials, and representatives from Kenya Seed and New KCC.
