Floods of Devastation in Mandera

Mandera South member of parliament T Abdul Kore has shared with us the devastation of floods in the area.
Flood effects in Elwak…,

It is with a heavy heart that I pass my condolences to the families and friends of my constituents who met their tragic deaths attributed to the effects of flooding yesterday. May Allah rest their souls in Jannatul Firdows and grant their families, friends and relatives patience and perseverance during this difficult moment.

Death is a serious, irreversible effect of flood and the reported deaths of three citizens in such a short period is too high by any standard. It is more sad that none of the flood victims in Elwak yesterday were swept away by flood water… It is important we all move with speed to prevent further deaths as buildings may collapse on people, or more people may die because of indirect reasons such as starvation, heart attacks or increased stress, or due to water and vector borne diseases.

The problem is acute in Elwak but it is widespread across Mandera South Constituency with its two sub counties of Mandera Central and Kotulo… Areas of Fatuma, Fincharo, Wargadud, Borehole 11 and Kotulo are all affected…. Every sector of the society is also affected.

We have reached out to many of our friends in the humanitarian sector as well as relevant departments of both levels of government and we are hopeful that help will arrive soon.

Kenya Redcross has already pledged immediate support in food and non food items to cover 200 households. The County government of Mandera has also pledged support in form of food, non-food items, animal vaccines, and sanitation products to help prevent waterborne diseases.”
