Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Impeached; Kithure Kindiki Appointed as Successor
In a dramatic turn of events, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was impeached by the Senate on October 17, 2023, following the ruling on 11 charges brought forward by Kibwezi West MP Mwingi Mutusi. Gachagua’s lawyer, Paul Mwite, had sought a postponement of the Senate meetings, citing Gachagua’s serious health concerns, including chest pain, but the request was denied.
Less than 24 hours after Gachagua’s impeachment, President William Ruto appointed Professor Kithure Kindiki, the Minister of Interior, as the Deputy President-elect of Kenya. This swift decision underscores the administration’s commitment to maintaining stability in leadership.
The National Assembly is currently convened in a special session to approve Kindiki’s appointment, marking a significant shift in the political landscape of the country. The events unfold as Kenya navigates a pivotal moment in its governance.
