In the quiet village of Kapkurunjo, Kenya, Roselyn Rotich Chepkemoi, a retired teacher from ACK Kapkurunjo, stands as a beacon of hope and resilience. Her journey from severe arthritis and numerous medical setbacks to a life of renewed freedom and mobility has captivated the local community and beyond.

This remarkable transformation culminated with her celebration of walking pain-free, a milestone achieved thanks to a series of successful surgeries at Tophill Hospital in Eldoret.

Chepkemoi’s health struggles began in the early 2000s, when she was in her early forties. It was a seemingly ordinary day on her farm that marked the beginning of her long and arduous journey. As she worked, she felt a sudden and excruciating pain in her back.

Initially, over-the-counter painkillers offered some relief, but the respite was temporary. A more serious incident occurred when Chepkemoi fell from a motorcycle during transportation, further aggravating her condition. Despite her attempts to manage her pain with various treatments, including traditional remedies and numerous medications, her condition continued to deteriorate.

By 2010, Chepkemoi’s medical issues had compounded. She underwent abdominal surgery, hoping to alleviate some of her ailments. However, this intervention did little to address her worsening arthritis. Her mobility became increasingly limited, and the pain she experienced extended from her back to her legs.

She sought help from several prominent hospitals, including Kapsabet Hospital and Mediheal in Kisumu. Despite undergoing various treatments and consultations, the progression of her arthritis left her in a state of despair.

The pivotal moment in Chepkemoi’s journey came when she visited Tophill Hospital in Eldoret. Despite her initial hesitation about undergoing surgery, largely due to financial concerns and fear of the unknown, her son’s encouragement led her to take a decisive step towards recovery.

In August 2023, she underwent her first knee replacement surgery. The operation was a significant success, and soon after, she had her second knee replaced, leading to a profound improvement in her quality of life.

Dr. Rono, Dr Maritim, the orthopedic surgeons and Dr Kirwa a clinician, all at Tophill Hospital were instrumental in Chepkemoi’s recovery. He explained that Chepkemoi’s condition, osteoarthritis, was affecting multiple joints, including her knees and spine. Dr. Kirwa explained the crucial role of early diagnosis and treatment, noting that osteoarthritis is a common condition among elderly women.

It can be exacerbated by factors such as obesity and poor diet. He advocated for increased awareness about preventive measures and the importance of seeking medical advice before conditions become severe.

David Chebii, the General Manager at Tophill Hospital, spoke about the broader implications of Chepkemoi’s story. He highlighted how modern lifestyles and environmental factors have contributed to an increase in chronic health conditions. Chebii stressed the hospital’s dedication to promoting preventive health care and supporting various communities, including educators. He encouraged teachers and other professionals to engage in regular wellness check-ups to prevent and manage health issues effectively.

Chepkemoi’s recovery was not just a medical triumph but also a testament to the power of support and perseverance. She expressed deep gratitude for the exceptional care provided by Tophill Hospital’s staff.

Their professionalism, compassion, and unwavering support played a crucial role in her successful recovery. Her experience has also shed light on the benefits of National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) coverage, which significantly alleviated the financial burden of her surgeries and treatments.

As she looks towards the future, Chepkemoi has become an advocate for proactive health management. She emphasizes the importance of regular medical check-ups and early intervention in managing chronic diseases.

Her journey from pain to triumph stands as an inspiring example for others facing similar health challenges. It underscores that with the right medical care, support, and personal determination, significant recovery is not only possible but achievable.
