Gachagua Responds to Impeachment Move by Deputy Speaker
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has spoken out following the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Gladys Shollei, charging him with treason and initiating impeachment proceedings. In a heartfelt address, Gachagua reflected on Shollei’s support during his previous legal troubles, recalling her presence at the DCI headquarters, where she brought him tea and lunch during his detention.
He expressed gratitude for her efforts in coordinating the collection of a 12.5 billion shillings cash bill and visiting him for four days in Gilgil, stating, “I will love you and cherish you forever for the rest of my life.”
Gachagua emphasized the importance of transparency in government processes, asserting that the impeachment allegations against him lacked substantive evidence. He reiterated his right to presumption of innocence, reminding lawmakers that he has not been subject to any investigations by Kenyan authorities. “In the absence of any serious reasons to believe that I have committed any offense, I do not accept these allegations,” he declared.
During this parliamentary session, presided over by Speaker Moses Wetangula, 281 Members of Parliament voted in favor of Gachagua’s impeachment, while 44 opposed it. The proceedings have sparked significant debate regarding accountability and governance in the current administration. Gachagua’s future now hangs in the balance as the situation unfolds, with implications for both his political career and the broader political landscape in Kenya.
