Government Commits to Free Vaccination for Livestock Nationwide
In a significant move aimed at bolstering the agricultural sector, His Excellency the President, Dr. Hon. William Ruto, has announced a comprehensive program to provide free vaccinations for all cows across the nation. This initiative, part of the government’s broader efforts to enhance the welfare of livestock, has been warmly welcomed by veterinary experts and stakeholders alike.
The announcement, made during a recent address, underscores the government’s commitment to revitalizing the crucial livestock industry, which plays a pivotal role in the nation’s economy. According to Dr. Erick Orimbo, the County Director of Veterinary Services for Migori County, the initiative marks a crucial step towards effectively controlling diseases that pose a threat to livestock health and productivity.
“The idea is commendable,” expressed Dr. Orimbo. “Vaccinating all animals nationwide is essential for disease control. However, the challenge lies in the implementation phase, which demands substantial financial and human resources investment.”
Dr. Orimbo highlighted the financial implications, noting that a single dose of the Foot and Mouth Disease vaccine costs approximately KSh. 120. Given the size of Kenya’s cattle population, which runs into the billions, the financial outlay for vaccinations against multiple transboundary diseases like Foot and Mouth Disease, Lumpy Skin Disease, and Anthrax is formidable.
“The scale of vaccination required is extensive,” emphasized Dr. Orimbo. “Each of these diseases demands targeted efforts and resources. While the government’s commitment is laudable, ensuring adequate funding and logistics will be critical to the success of this ambitious vaccination campaign.”
The initiative is set to be rolled out across all counties, with the aim of not only safeguarding livestock health but also enhancing productivity and ensuring food security.
