Government Initiative Aims to Streamline Mining Licensing Process and Boost Safety Measures in Migori County
In a significant step towards enhancing the mining sector’s efficiency and safety, the State Department for Mining, led by PS Elijah Mwangi, welcomed Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, spouse of the Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya, for the official launch of the Rapid Result Initiative (RRI) in Osiri-Matanda village.
The RRI, a collaborative effort spanning all 47 counties, aims to expedite the issuance of mining and mineral trading licenses, mineral processing permits, and Artisanal Mining Permits to cooperative societies and dealers across the nation. This coordinated endeavor seeks to combat the prevalence of illegal mining activities while ensuring regulatory compliance within the sector.
During the launch, over 20 marketing cooperatives in Migori County alone were slated to receive mining permits, marking a pivotal moment in formalizing artisanal mining operations. The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to fostering a conducive environment for miners and investors alike, emphasizing the necessity of active engagement in mining activities for license holders.
Notably, the State Department for Mining has bolstered its presence in counties by deploying additional officials tasked with assisting miners throughout the licensing application process. This proactive measure aims to streamline bureaucracy and promote inclusivity within the sector.
In alignment with efforts to prioritize safety standards, miners were provided with essential safety gear, including helmets, reflector jackets, and safety gloves. This investment in protective equipment underscores the government’s dedication to safeguarding the well-being of mining communities.
Furthermore, to support the equitable allocation of mining zones, the ministry has initiated a review of licenses held by investors engaging in speculative practices. By reallocating underutilized land to artisanal miners under marketing cooperatives, the government aims to optimize resource utilization and stimulate economic growth at the grassroots level.
The launch ceremony also witnessed the presentation of a new motor vehicle to the Regional Mining Office, symbolizing enhanced capacity for extension services, monitoring, and surveillance operations in the region. This logistical upgrade reflects the government’s proactive approach to supporting mining activities and ensuring regulatory compliance across the board.
In collaboration with stakeholders at both the national and county levels, the RRI signals a transformative shift towards sustainable and responsible mining practices in Kenya.
