Government Rallies Women Leaders to Tackle Gender-Based Violence and Femicide
In a significant move to address the alarming rise in gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide, Cabinet Secretary Hon. FCPA John Mbadi convened a high-level meeting with Women Representatives and Principal Secretary for Gender and Affirmative Action, Anne Wang’ombe. Held under the auspices of the Ministry of Gender, the session focused on outlining funding strategies to combat GBV and support survivors.
The CS reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of women and girls, emphasizing justice for victims, cultural reforms, and fostering a society that values and protects women. The meeting brought together a strong cohort of Women Representatives, including Esther Passaris (Nairobi), Cynthia Muge (Nandi), Caroline Ngelechei (Elgeyo Marakwet), Dorice Donya (Kisii), Lilian Chebet (Trans Nzoia), Anne Wamuratha (Kiambu), Beatrice Kemei (Kericho), and Jane Kagiri (Laikipia), the Chairperson of the 47 Women Representatives Caucus.
Principal Secretary Anne Wang’ombe highlighted the ministry’s focus on affirmative action programs and resource allocation as essential tools in combating GBV. She underscored the importance of empowering women and implementing sustainable strategies to support survivors and prevent violence.
The meeting showcased the critical role of Women Representatives in advocating for the rights and welfare of women and girls in their respective counties. Participants expressed optimism about the outcomes, emphasizing that actionable steps must follow to ensure tangible progress in the fight against GBV and femicide.
