Governor George Natembeya has called for increased collaboration among key agencies and stakeholders to combat the proliferation of illicit drinks and drug abuse in the region.

Addressing a multi-agency meeting at Kitale National Polytechnic, he emphasized the county’s vulnerability due to its border proximity to a neighboring country, which has made it susceptible to various forms of illicit trade, including counterfeit goods and smuggling activities.

The Governor stressed the urgent need to strengthen enforcement measures, particularly through enhanced inspection and licensing procedures to prevent the operation of unlicensed businesses.

Additionally, he expressed determination to establish rehabilitation centers throughout the county to address addiction issues.

In response to the growing threat of alcohol and substance abuse, President Dr. William Ruto directed Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to host leadership forums in the most affected counties to chart the government’s response.

To support these efforts, the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) is collaborating with local, regional, and international stakeholders to coordinate a comprehensive, multi-sectoral response to combat the challenges and consequences of alcohol, drug, and substance abuse nationwide.

The multi-agency meeting witnessed the participation of high-ranking county officials, representatives from various government authorities, law enforcement officers, and relevant stakeholders.
