Governor Natembeya Lauds NLC Efforts to improve informal settlement schemes
Governor George Natembeya has lauded the efforts of the National Land Commission and the World Bank to improve informal settlement schemes in the county through the Kenya informal settlement improvement program (KISIP).
After meeting a delegation from KISIP, the county chief said the initiative would contribute significantly to upscaling the living conditions of hundreds of Trans Nzoia residents living in informal settlements.
He explained that a program had already been rolled out to assist residents of the Shimo la Tewa slum in acquiring land title deeds. According to him, upgrading the infrastructure in the area will give Shimo la Tewa a new look.
“The government’s equitable share is very small and comes in irregular amounts, while this one from our supporters is more predictable and long-term, resulting in a more profound impact on those targeted,” he explained.
According to Janesrose Nasimiyu Mutama, CEC member for Lands, Housing, Physical Planning, and Urban Development, tenure regularization will increase property ownership security. Additionally, it will stimulate investment in the building and construction industry.
Owners of land title deeds will not only be able to access loans, but the legal documents will also serve as proof that they are indeed owners of their land.
She disclosed that phase one of the projects in the Shimo la Tewa slum in the Hospital ward will include planning, surveying, processing, and issuance of title deeds.
The CEC Lands said that in due time, phase two of the KISP Project will target Matisi, Tuwan Mitume, and Kipsongo informal settlements in Saboti Constituency and Cheberem and Kalabana settlements in Endebess Sub-county.
Zena Kurui, from the state department of Housing and Urban Development, engaged the community leaders from Shimo la Tewa slum during a public engagement. This was done to ensure that the project takes as little time as possible.
In Shimo la Tewa Kalabana and Cheberem informal settlements, we will do the planning, surveying, and issuing title deeds to beneficiaries. In the five other settlements that will benefit from infrastructure, they will receive power, water sanitation, and roads.
Area MCA Eric Wafula said the partnership between the two levels of government will enable Shimo la Tewa residents settle after living for decades without the vital document.
The MCA called on the area resident to cooperate with the ministry of land and the KISP programme implementers to ensure that they get the title deeds without any delays.
