Governor Natembeya Urges Trans Nzoia Residents to Demand Fair Maize Prices
Governor George Natembeya has urged residents of Trans Nzoia County to stop selling their maize at low prices to unscrupulous middlemen. Speaking during a tour of Chepchoina ward to assess the impact of flooding, the governor emphasized the need for farmers to wait for favorable prices.
“For years, our maize farmers have been exploited by middlemen who offer poor prices, resulting in significant losses,” Governor Natembeya stated. “We are committed to ensuring that our farmers receive fair compensation for their hard work through cooperative societies and value-addition initiatives.”
The governor announced plans to establish milling plants at the county’s Industrial Park once it is completed, aiming to add value to local farm produce. In addition, the governor distributed household items to flood-affected residents in collaboration with the Kenya Red Cross Society.
Governor Natembeya also urged residents, particularly pregnant women, to seek healthcare services at local health centers to prevent disease transmission and reduce maternal and child mortality rates. “Trans Nzoia County still has the highest number of women who deliver at home and transmit HIV to their children,” he said. “It is crucial for pregnant women to access regular healthcare to ensure the well-being of both mother and child.”
