Governor Otuoma Commissions Busia County Disaster Management Center
Busia County Governor Paul Otuoma commissioned the Busia County Disaster Management Center.
The facility which is domiciled at the Department of Public Works, Transport and Energy will play a key role in coordination of disaster mitigation and response incase of any calamity outbreak within and beyond the county.
Dr. Otuoma lauded the department for finishing the project in good time saying that it is evident we live in a world where sometimes we cannot predict certain calamities and therefore it’s of essence to plan for them in advance.
He said that there are disasters that are unforeseen but also there are those that we must prepare for alluding to flooding disasters in some parts of the county during rainy seasons.
He called upon responsible parties to ensure necessary measures are put in place to avoid loss of life or destruction of property.
The County boss moreso mentioned that emergency response needs coordinated efforts from the multi- agency team among them the county government, the police, County Commissioner, and other national government agencies provided there’s a clear frame work and extended the invite for their engagement.
His excellency challenged the senior officers and the public servants in the county to change tactics and attitude in order to enhance efficiency in service delivery.
” As people who have been given responsibilities of leadership, we must offer proper leadership to our people. Be ready for change because we need to give the people of Busia services. So anybody who thinks can hide behind tribal things or godfathers that will not help. We are here to work for the public and so be a good public servant like the oath you took when being employed that you’ll work,” he added.
Representing legislative arm of Busia County Government, Speaker of the County Assembly, Hon. Eng Fred Odilo, applauded the efforts of the department to complete the facility since it had stalled for seven years. He encouraged the department to consider equiping the facility with the necessary equipment needed in a disaster management center.
The County Executive Committee Member in charge of Public Works, Transport and Energy, Eng. Andrew Meso while addressing made commitment to revolutionise the department and make it a department that is keen on efficiency and quality service delivery.
” Now, it’s not just about changing the working space nor new and good looking structures, our aim is to change the perception and we have no choice but to deliver,” he said
