Governor Otuoma Distributes Relief Food in Bunyala
County Government of Busia in collaboration with the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) has distributed food and non food items to flood victims in Bunyala Sub County.
The items which consisted of maize flour, blankets, bar soaps, nets, sleeping mats, aqua tabs and Jericans will benefit over 894 households affected by floods.
Speaking at the Siagonjo Stadium in Bunyala South Ward where he officially flagged off the distribution exercise, Busia Governor, Dr Paul Otuoma expressed optimism that the completion of the Lower Nzoia Irrigation project will provide a lasting solution to flood problems in the area.
“If the project is implemented as it was designed from area of Cherangany it will greatly help in addressing the flood challenges that are being experienced,”
He said the project will also boost food security in the County, adding that the produced food will also benefit other Counties that are in need.
“If people in Egypt can benefit from the water through various projects why should our locals continue to suffer from floods yet God gave us the same knowledge?” Questioned the Governor.
The County boss extended appreciation to the KRCS, National Government and other partners for their support towards easing the burden of those affected by floods.
He said that the County Disaster Department has also been activated to ensure that it responds to arising emergencies, stressing that more funds will be set aside to strengthen its services.
The Chairperson of Busia Branch KRCS Raphael Namusala said they will continue partnering with the County Government to provide the much needed support particularly to those affected by floods.
The Health Executive, Hon. Beatrice Nakholi underscored the importance of flood victims embracing proper usage of nets to protect themselves against Malaria.
“Community Health Promoters should continue sensitizing residents especially expectant mothers to utilize the nets distributed,”
She further urged the beneficiaries to observe high standards of hygiene to safeguard themselves against water borne diseases.
Also present were a host of Members of the Busia County Assembly led by Stephen Nasiagi (Bunyala South).
The flood situation has been necessitated by water from River Yala, Lake Victoria Back flow and overflow from underground water to the surface.
