Elgeyo Marakwet county has acquired Sh75.5 Million road construction machinery to be used in three Wards.

Chepkorio Ward purchased a grader worth Sh16M, Lelan 20M while Soy North and Moiben-Kuserwo Wards went for excavators which costed Sh20.5 and 19M respectively.
Governor Wisley Rotich on Thursday presided over the handing over of a two graders and two excavators in Chepkorio Ward Office,Emsea, Cheptongei and Labot. The machinery was purchased through funds allocated to the Wards.

This makes the number of road construction equipment acquired for the Wards to five since another excavator worth Sh15 million was delivered to Soy South Ward two months ago.

Speaking during the handover, Mr Rotich said cost of roads construction and maintainance in the Wards will reduce by upto 75 % since the Wards will only be financing for fuel and maintenance of the machinery.

The machinery, he added will be used to grade and levelise school fields and athletics training grounds.

He said: “Purchasing these road construction machines was a well thought idea. The cost of doing roads will be more cheaper. We are not going to forget about hours that has been a darling of contractors. It is over.”

He urged the residents to consider funding projects that could transform their livelihoods instead of splitting Ward funds into hundreds, which according to him, such projects would not impact the lives of the residents.

“Now that you are done with road construction equipment, I urge you to prioritise a project like one of the hospitals.
Channel funds enough to equip with machines, make one of the health centres a state of the art and in the next financial year, you go for another project,” he said at Cheptongei, “please consider this when you go for public participation next week.”

MCAs John Kimeli, Simon Chepseba, Hillary Kiplagat and Priscilla Kurgat commended the governor for what they termed as workable and involving approach. “We have one of the listening leader in our you. We are going to support your manifesto is a achieved, ” said Chepkorio Ward representative John Kimeli.
Soy North Ward MCA Simon Chepseba said road construction consumed most of their Ward allocation funds, a similar sentiment echoed by his Moiben-Kuserwo counterpart Hillary Kiplagat.

“We have now reduced this through the acquisition of the excavator. We will utilise the remaining in other projects,” he said.
Soy South MCA Jonah Tanui said the Ward was already enjoying the services of their excavator. “We will open roads in every village. We are just starting and very soon all parts of the Ward will be accessible.”

Mrs Kurgat said they will immediately embark on grading their roads and focus on other projects.
