Groups warm up for Sh67M conversation grants
Water, Environment and Climate Change CeC member Jason Lagat led a sensitisation program on possible TerraFund grants to CBOs, CSOs and registered groups with special interests on environmental conservation initiatives and sustainable financial support to SMEs and MSMEs.
The forum which attracted about 300 community representatives was taken through how organised groups can benefit from upto 500,000 US dollar (Sh67.6M) environmental conservation fund from TerraFund.
Peter Ndunda, the Global Restoration Initiative’s country lead in Kenya said Elgeyo Marakwet County had been identified as a beneficiary owing to Governor Wisley Rotich’s efforts in environmental conservation.
He said: “We listen to Governor Rotich and we saw his seriousness in environmental matters. Other than growing trees, the program aims to carry out several other interventions to combat climate change and restore degraded environment besides improving household earnings and nutrition through sale of tree products and fruits.”
Mr Lagat urged local residents to take up the challenge and present best ideas that will make them win the grants.
“We have between 50,000 to 500,000 US dollars to be awarded to the group that will win. Entries are currently being received and it will close by next month,” he said, ” you should identify what best can be done to restore out environment. You are now our restoration champion.”
He asked them to dopt climate change mitigation measures like climate-smart activities for sustainability.
