High Court Rejects Deputy President Gachagua’s Bid to Suspend Impeachment Process
The High Court has once again denied Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s request to halt the ongoing impeachment proceedings against him, intensifying his political troubles. This decision marks a significant setback for Gachagua, who is facing mounting pressure from a faction of MPs calling for his removal over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.
The push for impeachment gained momentum in recent weeks, fueled by accusations of corruption and claims that Gachagua is attempting to undermine President William Ruto’s administration. In his legal challenge, Gachagua argued that the impeachment motion is politically motivated and lacks constitutional backing.
However, the High Court ruled that it would not intervene in the legislative process, emphasizing that Gachagua retains the right to contest the motion once it reaches Parliament. This is the second time the court has rejected Gachagua’s efforts to obstruct the no-confidence vote, deepening the political crisis surrounding his leadership.
The impeachment motion is set to be presented in Parliament on October 8, 2024, where MPs will determine whether the allegations against Gachagua warrant his removal from office. The situation has captured national attention, with Gachagua’s supporters alleging that political rivals are orchestrating his downfall, while opponents demand accountability and adherence to the rule of law.
As the political landscape shifts, Gachagua’s future hangs in the balance, with the impending parliamentary vote poised to be a defining moment in his tenure as Deputy President.
