High Failure Rate in Qatar Recruitment Draws Criticism from Labour Cabinet Secretary
Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua has expressed concern over the alarming failure rate among Kenyans applying for menial jobs with a Qatar-based company. The recruitment drive, which began on Friday, has attracted over 15,000 applicants vying for just 8,000 available positions in sectors such as hospitality, construction, and technical industries.
Mutua revealed that only about five percent of those interviewed have successfully qualified for the roles. “Out of 100 interviewed persons, only 5 passed,” he stated, highlighting the strict criteria set by the company, which demands specific skills for the available jobs.
The cabinet secretary indicated that they expect 3,000 Kenyans to receive job offers on Monday. He reassured applicants without passports that they would be able to obtain them within two days. The majority of those attending the recruitment are young individuals aged 20 to 29, reflecting the high demand for employment opportunities among Kenya’s youth.
However, this recruitment initiative has faced criticism from various quarters. Concerns have been raised regarding the safety and treatment of Kenyans working in the Middle East, with reports of abuse and even fatalities among workers. Critics argue that the national government should reconsider its stance on promoting such employment opportunities in light of these troubling accounts.
As the recruitment continues, the government faces mounting pressure to ensure the safety and rights of Kenyans seeking employment abroad.
